The United States Postal Service is reminding customers to inspect and maintain their mailboxes as part of National Mailbox Awareness Week, held annually during the third week of May.

The campaign is aimed at encouraging those with box-on-post-delivery to check the condition of their mailboxes and make necessary repairs.

According to USPS, regular mailbox maintenance supports efficient mail delivery, improves neighborhood curb appeal, and helps postal operations run more smoothly.

The Postal Service recommends several common maintenance tasks, including replacing loose hinges on mailbox doors, repainting mailboxes with rust or peeling paint, remounting unstable posts, and adding or replacing house numbers.

For information on mailbox standards, installation, maintenance, and other questions, visit the manage a mailbox page on the USPS's website.

Mailbox Awareness Week is promoted annually due to the ongoing wear and tear mailboxes experience throughout the year.

USPS is also highlighting mail security in partnership with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

The agencies work together to protect postal employees, secure the mail system, raise public awareness, and enforce laws related to mail protection.

Security tips include promptly retrieving mail and packages and reporting any instances of mailbox vandalism.

The United States Postal Service says if someone is seen tampering with a mailbox, customers are advised to contact the police.

Those with information about vandalism can report it directly to postal inspectors by calling 1-877-876-2455.

In addition, USPS encourages customers to sign up for Informed Delivery, a free service that allows users to view photos of incoming mail and receive delivery notifications.

The service offers Daily Digest emails that preview mail and packages and provide tracking and management tools.

Informed Delivery is available to customers with residential, business, or PO Box addresses in eligible ZIP Codes.
