Senator Debbie Smith to Return to Nevada Legislature Next Month

Nevada Senator Debbie Smith says she will return to the Senate next month after she underwent a surgery last month to remove an operable brain tumor.

On Wednesday, she released the following statement:

“Every day I'm feeling better, and I'm excited to return to Carson City in April,” said Sen. Smith. “We have so much important work left to do to truly make this the ‘Education Session,' and I can't wait to get back to work next month to help create new educational and economic opportunities for all Nevadans.”

Smith says she expects to return to the Senate during the first full week of April following the Easter holiday. Smith missed the first week of the Legislative session after making the announcement about her health.

Smith has been undergoing treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Senate leaders appointed substitutes to fill in for her on Senate committees.

Smith was first elected to the state Assembly in 2000 and won a seat in the Senate in 2012. The Reno Democrat has won several lawmaker of the year awards and is the president of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
