USA Cycling has announced that Reno will host the 44th installment of the Cyclo-cross National Championships in January 2018 at Rancho San Rafael Park.
Reno had been competing with Bend, Oregon, Hartford, Connecticut, and Louisville, Kentucky for the honor.
Cyclo-cross is a cycling event described as a steeplechase with a bike.
Race organizer and Glacier Cycling Principal Coby Rowe said, “We are thrilled at the news that we were selected. Cyclo-cross is the fastest growing segment of the cycling industry and our terrain is the perfect match for this sport.” Rowe added, “This race takes place in January which is typically a slow time of year for tourism in northern Nevada. This is a unique opportunity to showcase our area to outdoor enthusiasts.”
The event is expected to bring in nearly 7,000 visitors to Northern Nevada.
“As a destination, we could not be more excited to host an elite event such as USA Cycling's Cyclo-cross Nationals,” said Shelli Fine, Director of Sports Development, Reno Tahoe USA. “With our combination of world-class entertainment and hotels, all in such close proximity to the cyclo-cross venue, we are uniquely poised to execute one of the finest cylco-cross events to date. The cycling community in Reno is abuzz with anticipation and enthusiasm. We're thrilled and honored and can't wait to begin planning this prestigious event.”
