    NAME: Alexis Hill

    AGE: 41

    PARTY AFFILIATION: Democrat

    DAY JOB: Mother, county commissioner

    EDUCATION:

Bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M University’s George H.W. Bush School of Public Policy, master’s degree in public administration and public policy at the University of Nevada..

HOW LONG YOU HAVE LIVED IN NEVADA: 37 years

WRITE A BRIEF (TWO TO THREE SENTENCES) SUMMARY OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE THAT WOULD ENABLE YOU TO PERFORM THE DUTIES OF THIS OFFICE:

I am the sitting Washoe County Commissioner for District 1, and I am currently the Chair of the Board of County Commissioners. I served Sparks and Reno for more than a decade in roles overseeing planning, economic development, and arts and culture. I have worked in the private and nonprofit sectors as well, and went to school to learn the best practices for local government and work every day to enact those principles in my work as a County Commissioner.

WHAT IS YOUR TOP PRIORITY IF ELECTED?

Housing is my number one priority. Washoe County has done a wonderful job stabilizing our homeless population at the CARES Campus, and we have more than 200 permanent supportive housing units coming online. That being said, we still need more housing for our most vulnerable neighbors, and I will be working diligently to find funding for these needed projects. Additionally, we have enacted two phases of housing policies to support workforce housing in unincorporated Washoe County, including supporting accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and tiny homes. We are going to be reviewing the next phase of these housing recommendations soon, and I look forward to continuing the work to get housing online for our incredible working families in Washoe County. I also believe that our working community members deserve investments in parks and recreation so they can enjoy all of the outdoor recreation that Washoe County has to offer. To that end, I will be working with Reno and Sparks to create our first region-wide parks district to fund maintenance of our current parks and allocate funding for additional flat fields, pools, and trail connections.

IN JUST A FEW SENTENCES: WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM FACING OUR COUNTY, AND HOW WOULD YOU FIX IT?

The biggest problem facing our county is the division in our communities. I have had the honor to knock on doors the last few months and chat with neighbors at their doorstep, and we all have a lot more in common than what divides us. Washoe County adopted the dignity index (https://www.dignity.us/) last year, and we have been working to support healthy debate with dignity for our fellow neighbor.

WHAT’S YOUR PLAN TO HELP EASE THE HOUSING CRUNCH IN WASHOE COUNTY?

I am a big supporter of the Truckee Meadows Lands Bill that was introduced by Senator Rosen and is being considered by Congress. That Bill has (https://www.landsbill.org/) conservation carve-outs for our most important public lands in north Washoe County, allocates land to Tribal neighbors and supports their land priorities, and allocates land that is already disturbed for future development. I will be seeking both public and private funds to support housing (like we did so effectively for the CARES Campus – raising more than $7 million dollars of private funds). I also will be working with all of our regional partners to pool our land resources for workforce and permanent supportive housing.

IN ONE SENTENCE: WHAT’S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING VOTERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I love Washoe County and am so enthusiastic about our future as the most livable county in the nation.

YES OR NO: WILL YOU ACCEPT THE RESULTS OF THIS ELECTION, WHETHER YOU WIN OR LOSE?

Yes, absolutely. I’ve always certified the election and believe that our democracy requires candidates to support the voters’ will regardless of the outcome.
