Ready to learn how to square dance? Bill Sutman of the Northern Nevada Square Dance Association takes 2 Plus You Nevada host Sarah Johns, 2 Plus You Nevada Coordinator James Michael Dorado and KTVN’s Meteorologist Angela Schilling onto the dance floor for their first hands-on square dance lesson. Each beginner is paired with an experienced square dancer as Bill teaches the group the “Ladies Chain” and other fundamental calls before putting everything together with music.

Bill breaks the movements down step by step, teaching Sarah, James and Angela how to form a right-hand star for the Ladies Chain, complete a Courtesy Turn, perform Ladies Center and Men Sashay, and move into the Promenade position. With their experienced dance partners helping guide them through the square, the lesson demonstrates how beginners can learn individual calls and gradually combine them as the caller directs the dance.

Once the basics are down, it’s time to turn up the music and put everything together! Sarah, James and Angela put their new skills to the test alongside their experienced partners as Bill calls the Ladies Chain, Allemande Left, Do-Si-Do, Right and Left Grand, Promenade, Ladies Center and Men Sashay, and Weave the Ring. There are a few wrong turns and plenty of laughs along the way—but that’s part of learning! Watch as three first-time square dancers go from learning individual calls to completing a real square dance with help from Northern Nevada’s experienced dancers.
