Chris Larson Head Shot

Chris Larson joined the 2 News Nevada team in the spring of 2024 as the chief meteorologist for the Storm Watch weather team.

This is a homecoming of sorts for Chris; he previously served as chief meteorologist at another Reno television station for ten years between 2003 and 2013 and first moved to Lake Tahoe in 2001 to work for Heavenly Ski Resorts television show, Another Heavenly Morning.

Chris has 35 years of broadcasting experience as an anchor, reporter, and meteorologist. A career that has taken him to some exciting and challenging weather markets on both the East and West coasts. He’s worked in Charlotte, NC; Charleston, SC; Colorado Springs, CO; and now a return trip to Reno. He says forecasting the weather is always a detail-oriented job, but mountain meteorology, especially snow and wind forecasting, can be especially challenging. And for regions like western Nevada, which sit in the lee of the Sierra, the challenges expand as well. But the goal is always the same: to give viewers the best possible information on the weather and conditions that impact their lives. Sometimes it’s as simple as the forecast for your morning walk… other times it’s weather conditions that can potentially be devastating or even deadly.

“Since I started doing the weather in Charleston, South Carolina, back in the 2000s, the technological advancements in weather forecasting and modeling the atmosphere are absolutely staggering. It may never be a perfect science, but I think forecasts will continue to become more and more accurate with the increasing power of computing.”

That’s why Chris Larson and the Storm Watch Weather team are committed to bringing you the most accurate forecast they possibly can. Always bringing you coverage you can count on.

Chris is excited to be back home in Northern Nevada and is always excited about the forecasting challenges that Northern Nevada and the Sierra hand out day after day.

“I grew up in the mountains of North Carolina; that’s where I learned to love snow and skiing. (Yes, there is skiing in North Carolina!) Albeit the Appalachians are older and a little more worn away than the towering peaks of the Sierra. And once you’ve skied Lake Tahoe and experienced a few Sierra storms… there’s no going back.”

Chris and his wife Melissa are both avid skiers. She’s from Denver and went to school at Western State in Gunnison and got a degree while skiing at Crested Butte. They met at Heavenly in 2001 and have been making turns together ever since.

A member of the American Meteorological Society, Chris holds the AMS Seal of Approval and was awarded the seal in 2005. Chris is also an Emmy award-winning and -nominated meteorologist. He was awarded best weather segment by the RTNDAC while previously in Reno.
