The California Highway Patrol out of Truckee is warning area residents of a new phone scam.

The scammers call and pose as "AMBER Alert representatives." They say that the scammers then offer to "register" your children, asking for confidential information and eventually to meet at your home.

CHP says that this is not how the AMBER Alert system works.

Some reminders from CHP:

  • The California Highway Patrol is the only agency authorized to activate AMBER Alerts - no registration is required.
  • Never provide personal information or answer calls from unknown or "possible scam" numbers.
  • If you've been contacted by a scammer, report it to your local law enforcement agency immediately.
