An investigation is underway after an inmate died in Mono County Jail on Friday morning.
The Mono County Sheriff's Office says deputies found 49-year-old John DeMotto unresponsive alone in his cell just before 3:15 a.m.
Medical services were then called and attempts were made to revive DeMotto but he was declared dead at 3:52 a.m.
Investigators from the Mono County District Attorney and Mono County Sheriff’s Office are conducting the in-custody death investigation.
The autopsy will be conducted by Washoe County, which has been contracted by the Mono County Sheriff’s Office for pathology services.
DeMotto had been in custody since June 9, 2026, on charges of driving under the influence of narcotics and possession of narcotics.
