Donner Summit is notorious for its poor driving conditions in the winter months.

2 News Nevada spoke to some folks who may not be from the area, but they definitely know snow.

"I'm coming down from Haines, Alaska," said Cami Streifel.

They said the best thing you can do is prepare for a closed road.

"Always keep a below-zero-degree sleeping bag," said Acacia Miles. "Always have non-perishables."

Carynn Jo said another great idea is "keeping extra hats and mittens [in the car], especially in case yours got wet. And you always need a pair, especially when you're out."

Streifel recommends "a blanket, extra snacks, water. And then I have a little propane stove that I use as well if I ever get stuck."

A longtime local said when Interstate 80 over the summit is closed, the effects ripple all the way back to Truckee.

"It gets backed up. Oftentimes [drivers] will come through Truckee and fill up kind of a parking," said Elizabeth Condon.

Condon says you should stay ready for an emergency.

"Pack a bag full of water, maybe a bottle that you could urinate in, because sometimes 80 gets closed," Condon said, "and a blanket to keep warm."

Even if the speed limit sign says you can drive 65 miles an hour, the conditions might tell you otherwise.

"The speed limits are recommended for a good time. Those are there for sunny days," Miles said. "You need to take it at least 10 to 15 miles per hour slower."

On that note, there's one thing everyone wants you to keep in mind.

"Take it easy, take it slow," Miles said.

"Slow down. Enjoy yourselves. Enjoy the holidays," said Alida Labia.

"Drive slow. You don't need to be ripping," Jo said.
