The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a wolf attack on a loose steer on Wednesday.

It happened north of Chandler Road in Quincy, according to a release from the PCSO.

The steer had recently escaped its enclosure, and its owners had been trying to recapture it using a catch pen and game cameras.

On Wednesday morning, the owner received notification that the camera system was activated by movement.

Watching the stream from the camera, they saw the steer circling and bellowing, and what appeared to be a wolf aggressively circling the steer.

The owner rushed to the area, where he saw the wolf running up the road.

He found the steer with injuries to the neck and chest consistent with being attacked and tried to corral it, but it ran into the woods.

When the Sheriff's Office responded, they found hair and blood droplets from the steer where the attack happened, and large footprints consistent with a wolf.

All the items were photographed and collected for DNA analysis to try to determine which pack the wolf belongs to.

Members from the USDA Wildlife Services reviewed the video and examined the evidence, and confirmed the animal that attacked the steer was a wolf.
