A black bear being cared for by Animal Ark died overnight due to the stress from wildfires in the area.
In a post on Facebook, Animal Ark said the totality of the recent situation proved to be too much for their bear Gracie, who arrived at Animal Ark in April of 2006 as a cub and turned 20 on February 20 of this year.
"Gracie was a beloved member of the Animal Ark family, and we know she was deeply loved by our staff, volunteers, supporters, and guests," said Animal Ark in their post.
Other animals in Animal Ark's care are stable, and conditions at the facility are being monitored closely.
Steps are being determined for moving smaller animals back to the Ark.
"The Bug and Fred Mountain Fires have profoundly impacted Animal Ark and our surrounding community," said Animal Ark's post. "The recovery process will take weeks, months, and possibly years. We believe in the resilience of the Animal Ark and our community, while also recognizing that we have a long pathway of collective healing ahead."
