With the first winter storm of the season rolling through northern Nevada, the mountain roads were wet, cold, and icy.Â
Some members of the Incline Village community gave tips for preparing for this time of year.Â
"Make sure you have all wheel drive on your car," said Ralph Ohlson. "I have snow tires. It's very important. Make sure the windshield wipers are great on your car. Just keep it up to date. And if you have to drive down to Reno, try not to go down Mt. Rose. I usually go through Truckee if I have to go to Reno, or I go through Carson City and around."
He adds that when driving, always make sure to have emergency supplies like a blanket, extra food, and water packed and ready to go in case you get stuck or roads get shut down.Â
Some Incline Village community members added some helpful driving tips as well. Colleen Wynans, who is visiting from the east coast, says, "Drive around with good tires. If you need chains, have them loaded up in the car, have your cat litter, your blanket, extra water loaded up in the car."
They also say to make sure you give yourself extra time, so as not to speed, and leave a good following distance in case you need to brake.Â
But the Incline residents aren't just preparing for driving in these conditions, they are getting their homes ready as well.Â
"Have your chimney flue inspected and ready to go," said Wynans. "So, if you have a gas fireplace or any of that, you're ready to go. Make sure your windows are chalked. Make sure you've had your heating tuned up. Don't wait until the blizzard hits for you to realize that your furnace isn't working."
With this being the first big storm of the season, it is always smart to start preparing for the unexpected.Â
