For people who have already set aside money for charitable giving, Thursday offers a chance to turn those dollars into support for causes and communities close to home. Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada encourages donors to direct funds to local nonprofits as DAF Day returns Oct. 8.

Donor-advised fund, or DAF, Day is a national giving day focused on charitable accounts that allow donors to recommend grants to eligible nonprofits over time. The event is now in its third year after launching in 2024.

A donor-advised fund is a charitable giving account established through a sponsoring organization, such as a community foundation or financial institution. Donors contribute assets to the account and can later recommend grants from those funds to eligible nonprofit organizations.

“A donor-advised fund gives people another powerful way to turn their generosity into meaningful help for their neighbors,” said Marie Baxter, CEO of Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada. “On DAF Day, we hope donors will think about the needs they see right here in Northern Nevada and consider putting those charitable dollars to work. A gift to Catholic Charities helps us meet immediate needs while also walking alongside individuals and families as they work toward greater stability.”

Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada serves individuals and families experiencing poverty and instability throughout the region. Its programs include food access through St. Vincent’s Food Pantry and Dining Room, hygiene and household necessities, emergency assistance, immigration legal services, recovery and family stabilization programs, wellness outreach, and long-term programs aimed at helping families move toward economic self-sufficiency.

More than $326 billion is currently held in donor-advised funds and committed to charitable giving, according to the information provided by Catholic Charities. DAF Day is intended to encourage donors to activate some of those charitable dollars and support nonprofit organizations in their communities.

The giving day is held annually on the second Thursday of October. For people who already have a donor-advised fund, participating can be as simple as recommending a grant to Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada through their DAF provider.

“Whether someone supports our food programs, recovery services, family stabilization efforts or our broader mission to help people move out of poverty, every gift becomes part of something larger,” Baxter said. “DAF Day is a wonderful reminder that resources already designated for charitable giving can make an impact today.”
