Churchill County email scam

The Churchill County Sheriff's Office is warning residents and businesses about a fraudulent email circulating in the community that falsely claims to be from Churchill County Planning and Zoning.

The email tells recipients they owe fees and provides instructions for arranging a wire transfer.

County officials say Planning and Zoning does not conduct business this way and will never ask residents or businesses to wire money to pay outstanding fees.

The Sheriff's Office offers the following tips to help protect against the scam:

  • Check the sender's email address. Official Churchill County employee email addresses use the domain @churchillcountynv.gov.

  • Don't respond to suspicious emails or follow instructions to wire money.

  • Avoid suspicious links and attachments. Don't click links or open attachments in unexpected emails.

  • Verify payment requests directly. If you receive an unexpected request for additional fees, contact Churchill County Planning and Zoning at (775) 423-7627.

Anyone unsure whether an email or payment request is legitimate should contact the department directly before taking action.
