The Reno City Council voted to approve the budget for 2027 fiscal year during their public meeting on Wednesday.

As we've reported, it also includes a $9 million increase to the Reno Police Department.

"For fiscal year '27 we are funding fleet replacement and so that is a big portion of that increase. So, it's between the collective bargaining agreements, which we are required to do and the fleet replacement program," says City of Reno Finance Director Vicki Van Buren.

The approved budget also includes lowering a land use appeals fee to $250.

It also includes adding a network engineer and a systems analyst to support cybersecurity in street and sewer operations.

The Reno City Council discussed the tentative budget for fiscal year 2027 during their meeting on Wednesday.

It includes $9 million more for the Reno Police Department.

The City says about half of that amount is due to required collective bargaining agreements to cover employee salaries and benefits.

The other half is related to updating the department's vehicle fleet.

"We're looking at 7% increase just based on fleet technology in the vehicles and everything. I believe that right now we're on a five-year replacement for marked patrol units and a 10-year replacement for unmarked units,” says Acting Reno Police Chief Corey Solferino.

The City’s director of finance, Vicki Van Buren add, “This current year, that was one of the things that was cut from the budget in order to balance the budget. we did not replace any of the vehicles for the fleet program and so we're having to ramp that back up."

City council is also rolling back part of an increase to sanitation fees that was decided back in February.

It will not move forward with the Consumer Price Index increase this year – for residents the CPI increase is typically 2-3% for sanitation fees, however, residents will still see an increase to sewage bills from the franchise fee from 8% to 14%.

The changes will still need to be formally adopted on May 20.
