The City of Reno hosted a special hazardous and electronic waste collection event on Saturday, giving people the opportunity to drop of household hazardous waste, electronic waste and other items.
Some who attended the event says were turned away after waiting in line for an extended period of time.
In response, the city released the following statement:
"Bins filled to capacity quickly during today’s hazardous and e-waste drop-off event. As communicated in advance, capacity was limited, and community members were encouraged to arrive early.
Vehicles began lining up as early as 6 a.m., with the event starting at 9 a.m. Staff carefully monitored and counted vehicles beginning before the event opened and continued throughout the event to track capacity and help prevent residents from waiting in line when no additional vehicles could be accommodated.
Once staff confirmed that the event was full, they notified individuals waiting in line, and those who arrived after capacity was reached were turned away.
No waste was left or disposed of along the roadway during the event.
We understand the frustration this may have caused and appreciate the community’s patience. We are also grateful to the volunteers who helped operate today’s event.
Hazardous and e-waste events cost approximately $8,000 each to operate. Due to the cost, there are no additional hazardous and e-waste drop-off events scheduled at this time.
Community members who have other bulky household items to dispose of can bring them to an upcoming community cleanup this fall. More information is available on the City’s Community Cleanups webpage."
