Tech company Samsung is moving to the next step in their Solve for Tomorrow contest, narrowing down the participants to one from each state. Nevada's winner is from right here in Reno.
The Doral Academy of Northern Nevada was selected as the state winner for Nevada in Samsung's 15th annual contest.
The Solve for Tomorrow contest is a national competition for kids in grades 6-12 to use STEM disciplines to create solutions for issues in their local communities.
For the state win, Doral Academy has been awarded a $12,000 Samsung technology prize package. This includes a video kit to showcase the school's proposed STEM solution submitted for the contest.
For the contest, students at Doral have been busy helping a fellow student. The student is missing his arm from the forearm downward, which prevented him from playing the violin.
The team is designing a prosthetic arm that will allow him to hold and use the bow while he uses his hand on the violin to finger the notes. The team also plans to include a plucking mechanism so that he can play pizzicato when needed.Â
Samsung is providing employees to serve as mentors for the state teams moving forward, guiding the teams through project development and prototype building as they build towards the final phase of the contest.
10 finalist schools will be chosen from the 50 states. The seven runners up will win $50,000 in technology and classroom supplies.
Three national winners will be awarded a prize package valued oat $100,000.
