NHP Crash Investigation

An early morning rollover crash along Interstate 80 west of West Wendover left one person dead and remains under investigation by Nevada State Police.

Troopers responded about 5:07 a.m. on Monday, June 1, to a report of a crash near mile marker 109 in Elko County, about 23 miles west of West Wendover.

A preliminary investigation found that a gold Oldsmobile Alero was traveling eastbound in the left travel lane when it failed to maintain its lane and entered the dirt center median, striking a metal paddle marker on the left side of the car. Investigators said the driver steered right and then immediately left, causing the car to re-enter the median. The driver then steered right again, causing the car to rotate clockwise in the median.

The car's left tires’ abnormal grooves caused it to overturn into the dirt. The car came to rest on its wheels facing southeast in the center median.

Authorities said the driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected as the car overturned.

The driver, identified as 52-year-old Matthew Allen Szukala, of West Jordan, Utah, died at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol Major Incident Reconstruction Team.
