For generations of Lake Tahoe visitors and locals, Gar Woods has been synonymous with waterfront dining, Carnelian Bay and, of course, the famous ‘Wet Woody’. Now, the longtime Tahoe favorite is getting ready for a change.
Gar Woods is taking a break after a busy summer, giving the longtime Carnelian Bay restaurant a chance to spruce things up before it returns in December.
The restaurant announced the planned closure on Instagram, saying, “Gar Woods is going on vacation!” The break begins October 8.
Gar Woods said the restaurant will use the time to make updates before welcoming customers back.
“We’ll be back in December - a little fresher, a little newer, but still the same Gar Woods you’ve loved for 38 years.”
The restaurant also encouraged customers to stop by for its last ‘Wet Woody Wednesday’ next week before the break.
According to the restaurant’s website, Gar Woods has been part of the Carnelian Bay dining scene since 1988, when the location became Gar Woods. The restaurant's history is closely tied to the area's boating culture and the Gar Wood boats that were known for racing and pleasure boating.
Garfield Wood was an engineer, industrialist, and inventor who became known for his racing and pleasure boats. Several Gar Wood boats originally delivered to Lake Tahoe in the early 1920s remain in the area, and some can be seen from the pier at Gar Woods.
The restaurant's location also has a long history connected to boating and recreation on Lake Tahoe.
Gar Woods plans to reopen in December following the updates.
