An inmate at the Carson City Jail died while in custody on Saturday.

At around 1:19 p.m. on January 17, Carson City Fire and Paramedics responded to the jail on a report that an inmate was unresponsive and not breathing, according to a Facebook Post from the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

Attempts were made to revive the inmate, but they were pronounced dead at the scene around 1:50 p.m.

Staff at the jail were initially notified by an inmate that another inmate looked like they were experiencing medical issues in the shower.

Staff found the inmate responsive but struggling, and deputies helped them to get dressed and moved them to the detention observation area by wheelchair.

When they got there, the inmate collapsed in the wheelchair, unresponsive.

According to records, the inmate had a long history of substantial medical challenges.

The inmate who died had been in continuous Carson City Sheriff’s custody since November 19 of last year after a judge issued a warrant for failure to appear. They were arrested in Reno.

Their original charge was indecent exposure, which happened in November of 2022.

An additional contempt of court warrant was issued in February of 2023, resulting from the initial offense.

The identity of the inmate will be released once next of kin is notified.

The death is being investigated by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Nevada Investigations Division.
