While some people prefer getting their Christmas trees at a tree lot or using a fake one, others head into the forest and cut down a tree themselves.

People we spoke with say cutting your own tree can keep it alive longer, and it can be much cheaper than purchasing one.

However, most people we spoke with say that the most important part, is being able to get outdoors and create memories with loved ones.

"There is always some type of memory that is created when you are out in a group with your friends and family. And there is something to be said about going to a store and picking out your tree that way too, but when you are out in nature breathing in fresh air and smelling the tree pine - there is something special in that," said Cheryl Guinan.

People can cut down trees in many places, but there are some popular spots just off of Mount Rose Highway.

Some people were able to find trees near the parking lot, while others hiked over a mile to find the right tree.

Some people we spoke with say the experience was worth it, but it wasn't as easy as they thought it would be.

"It was fun, but it was a lot more work than I thought it would be. I thought it would be kind of easy because it is not that big of a tree... but it was more work than I thought it would be," said Paul Assanah.

Before you can cut down a tree, you need a permit and there are some rules you have to follow.
