With the holidays on their way, online shopping will become more frequent. This means more package deliveries - and more opportunities for thieves.
Keeping that in mind, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office has taken some time to relay some helpful information regarding how to best protect your packages this holiday season, and what to do if you find yourself with any packages stolen:
- Track your packages - Use package tracking to know when your package is coming and to plan to be home to retrieve it.
- Have packages delivered to a secure location - If you won't be home, have your package delivered to a secure location like a workplace, friend's house, or package locker.
- Request signature confirmation - Choose delivery options that require a signature upon delivery so the package isn't left unattended.
- Use a security camera - A visible security camera or video doorbell can deter thieves and provide evidence for responding deputies. You can also set up alerts to receive notifications when a package is delivered.
- Coordinate with neighbors - Establish a system with neighbors to help each other keep an eye on packages.
If you find yourself the victim of thieves or porch piracy, officials recommend to contact law enforcement immediately to being an investigation, and to also contact the online retailer to report the discrepancy.
Many retailers work diligently to fulfill orders, even if they have been stolen.
The Sheriff's Offices will conduct house watches for people who are out of town during the holiday season - to request your house be checked by deputies or volunteers, stop by your local substation and provide your information so that you can be added to the list of homes to be checked.
