The Department of Veterans Affairs dedicated Nevada’s first national cemetery Friday in Elko.
When it opens in late 2026, it will be the 158th VA cemetery and the second national cemetery opened under the second Trump Administration.
The first phase will include 1,045 gravesites. Once all three phases are completed, the cemetery is expected to serve more than 3,705 veterans, spouses and eligible children within a 75-mile radius of Elko.
Nevada U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto spoke at the dedication, "Before today the closest national cemetery for Veterans in the Elko area was Snake River Canyon in Idaho, that's 169 miles away. That's a two-and-a-half-hour drive on a good day just to visit your loved one as you all know."
The Senator introduced legislation to create the cemetery in 2020. It's located at 3602 Jennings Way in Elko.
