Families looking to get a jump on the new school year will have a chance to pick up free backpacks and school supplies while spending an afternoon enjoying food, music and activities at Rancho San Rafael Park.
Kalapu Fale Kai Pahia, operating under FKP Global Services Inc., will host its fourth annual Backpack Drive from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 24, at the park, located at 1595 N. Sierra St.
The free event is open to the public, with backpacks and school supplies available to local children while supplies last. Registration is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m., and an adult must accompany children.
The backpack giveaway is just one part of the afternoon. Organizers have planned live music, games and food, along with free lunches, haircuts and face painting for families attending the event.
Visitors also can check out a car show hosted by the Polynesian Car Club of Reno, browse booths from local businesses and community organizations, and explore a first responders and military display area. Organizers said the display is expected to include Reno Fire apparatus, law enforcement K9 units, National Guard vehicles and a possible Nevada Army National Guard Black Hawk helicopter on static display.
"Your level of exposure determines your level of success. This event is about putting that into action — giving our kids what they need to start the school year strong, and giving our community a reason to come together," said Notis Tupou-Fulivai, Community and Media Liaison, FKP Global Services Inc.
The annual event is made possible through support from the Nevada Army National Guard, the Las Vegas Raiders, and Western Nevada Supply.
