Lear Theater Front Entrance

Four options have been pitched to the Reno Coty Council for the restoration of the Lear Theater by the Architectural Resources Group.

The first option would stabilize and clean the building which would cost between $570,000 and $590,000.

The second option would involve a community arts program and would cost $17 to $19 million in renovation costs and additions.

The third option involves a performing arts center and could cost more than $22 million.

The fourth option would involve a performing arts venue with a cost of more than $21 million.

The theater has grants through the State Historic Preservation Office through 2060.

Still, many on the council said even the most affordable option is likely too expensive.

During the meeting, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and Councilmember Kathleen Taylor said there was no money to address issues with the theater.

Taylor said the property should be sold in January while Schieve said she doesn't want the building sold for commercial use.

Others suggested potentially leasing the property or said they were not ready to give up on trying to save it.
