Reno police issued 88 traffic citations and 26 warnings during pedestrian safety enforcement operations conducted throughout July as officers focused on violations involving both drivers and pedestrians.
The Reno Police Department's Traffic Division carried out the enforcement effort with assistance from a grant provided by the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.
Eight officers worked in designated pedestrian safety zones downtown and other areas with high pedestrian traffic, targeting violations of laws intended to improve pedestrian safety.
Under Nevada law, pedestrians are required to use sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian bridges and obey traffic control signs and signals. When no sidewalk is available, pedestrians must walk on the left side of the street facing traffic.
Drivers are required to yield to pedestrians and must not pass vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.
The Reno Police Department and the Nevada Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety encouraged both drivers and pedestrians to share the road, stay alert, be aware of their surroundings, and follow laws designed to protect all road users.
Officials also reminded the public of a simple safety message: "Look Up, Look Out."
