SafeVoice Data Breach .jpg

Students and families use SafeVoice to report concerns about school safety and student well-being, trusting that they can speak up anonymously. Now, a cybersecurity incident involving the system's software provider has raised concerns about the privacy of some reports in Nevada.

The Washoe County School District shared information with families after the Nevada Department of Education reported a data breach involving Navigate360, the third-party vendor that provides SafeVoice's digital tip intake platform.

According to information on the SafeVoice website, an investigation determined that about 10% of tips containing personally identifiable information may have been affected. The incident has also affected other states across the country.

SafeVoice was established by the Nevada Department of Education in 2017 to help protect student well-being, prevent violence, and save lives. The system allows students, parents and school staff to report threats to their own safety or the safety of others, with trained professionals responding around the clock.

Despite the breach, the system remains fully operational. Its hotline, mobile app and online reporting form are still active and monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Because of state legal restrictions and the system's anonymous design, officials said they cannot directly notify people whose information may have been compromised.

The Nevada Department of Education and Nevada Department of Public Safety are working with education leaders in other states to seek accountability and transparency from Navigate360. State officials, with support from the governor's office, are also evaluating alternative platforms with stronger security protections.

People who believe their personal information may have been affected are encouraged to consider data and credit monitoring, including for children younger than 18.

Navigate360 has established a call center to answer questions about the incident. It can be reached toll-free at (833)966-1754 on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
