TMFR Green Waste Event

September 2023

Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue will hold its final green waste collection day of the season on Saturday with two locations in Washoe County.

In a release on their website, TMFR says there will be locations in north and south Washoe County where people can dispose of their dry and dead vegetation, shrubs, tree branches, and other potential wildfire fuels.

Those locations are the Red Rock Volunteer Fire Department on North Red Rock Road in Reno in the north and Jones Creek Trail Head off of Mount Rose Highway, west of the Galena Creek Visitor Center at the picnic area in the south.

Collection hours at both locations is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The green waste disposal aims to allow people to create defensible spaces to protect homes and property from wildfires.

The event is free and sponsored by the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District for all Washoe County residents, with support from NV Energy, the Nevada Division of Forestry, Living With Fire, and Fire Adapted Nevada.

Examples of accepted items include junipers, pines, rabbitbrush, sagebrush, and other woody vegetation.

Items that won't be accepted include household garbage and trash, lumber, hazardous materials, grass clippings, dirt and gravel, and stumps with root balls.  Tree stumps more than 8 inches in diameter will not be accepted. TMFR also cannot take items in bags or commercial waste from contractors or landscape companies.

People are also asked not to dispose of waste outside the hours of the event.
