It starts with a message that looks official, warning you owe a fine and need to pay right away.

According to the Storey County Sheriff's Office in an online post, a new scam is circulating that pretends to be from the State of Nevada and pressures people to act immediately. Deputies say the messages often demand quick payment and are designed to create a sense of urgency.

In a public alert, the agency warned, “SCAM ALERT You guessed it…another scam is going around. This one pretends to be from the State of Nevada and ‘requires’ you immediately pay a fine.”

Deputies say the scam may direct people to click links, scan QR codes, or make payments over the phone, all methods they say should raise concern.

“This is a scam! Do not click links, scan QR codes, or pay by phone,” the alert states.

According to deputies, legitimate notices about fines or legal matters are not sent by phone or email. Instead, official communication is sent through the mail.

They are urging people to verify any claims directly with legitimate offices before taking action.

“Please call legitimate offices to confirm if you have an issue you need to resolve,” the alert states. “Official notices are not sent via phone or email. They will be sent via mail.”

Deputies say taking a moment to verify the source can prevent people from falling victim to scams like this.

“Always confirm the source is legitimate before making any kind of payment. Stay vigilant!” said the Storey County Sheriff’s Office.
