We now know why a portion of Pyramid Highway was shut down early Monday morning.
Sparks Police say they're investigating a homicide-suicide that started just after 12:30 a.m. with a teenage girl calling 911 reporting that her father shot her mother while they were driving in the area of Veterans Parkway and E. Greg Street.
They say the teen further advised dispatchers that she was still inside the car and that her mother was critically injured.
Just after 12:45 a.m. police found the car on Los Altos Parkway where they tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspect identified as Richard Avalos-Flores drove off. Police initiated a pursuit which moved onto Pyramid Highway. Once on Pyramid Highway officers successfully executed a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) to bring the car to a stop.
Once stopped, Avalos-Flores ignored repeated officer commands and subsequently suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound while inside the car. Officers immediately approached the car and successfully removed the teen, who was not hurt.
Officers also located the mother, Lorea Angulo, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Officers immediately rendered emergency medical aid to both individuals.
Avalos-Flores died at the scene. Angulo was transported to an area hospital, where she later later died.
