U.S. Forest Service

The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the U.S. Forest Service recently responded to an illegal campsite at Luther Pass.

They're using it as an opportunity to remind the public about the dangers associated with illegal camping.

On Friday, a Lake Tahoe Basin fire prevention volunteer and a fire engine quickly extinguished an illegal campfire on the site, as winds were set to pick up later that afternoon.

They released the following reminders on their Facebook page:

  • Only camp in developed campgrounds with designated campsites. Dispersed car camping or overnighting is not permitted in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
  • Campfires (wood or charcoal) are only allowed within permanent metal fire rings in open, developed campgrounds.
  • Always drown, stir and feel your campfire to completely extinguish it—"If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave!"
