Hundreds of people are flocking to the Truckee River for Memorial Day weekend.
If you're dipping in the river to cool off, don't forget your life jacket. All it takes is one burst of strong current to make your weekend a whole lot worse.
2 News Nevada asked the community for some other ways they're staying safe.
"Bring a canopy like us, you know, bring hats, bring whatever you can and drink a lot of water mainly," said Walter Gudiel from Sparks.
Carlos Mancia from Reno recommends "sunscreen, water, staying hydrated, electrolytes. Especially when the sun starts getting real hot, you want to stay in the shade kind of cooler. You got to have that water."
Mancia enjoyed Mayberry Park Sunday morning with friends and family.
One of the kids floated in the river, and they had a neat trick to keep him close.
"We've got like, a rope tied down to some of the rocks and stuff like that," Mancia said, "and then we just kind of watching out for making sure, like, he doesn't float away or they don't float away. and then if it happens, we're jumping in."
Breaking out the grill? Whether you're along the river or at home, Reno Fire recommends setting it up 10 feet away from any buildings or vegetation. You should also pour water on any coals or ash when you're done.
For road trips short and long, the Red Cross of Northern Nevada recommends a stocked emergency kit, and a plan to designate a sober driver or find another way home if you're drinking.
However you're recreating this weekend, we wish you a fantastic - and safe - time.
"Enjoy time floating down the river, it's real nice," Mancia said.
"Happy Memorial Day, everybody," Guidel added. "Enjoy the weekend. Be safe."
Alin Beane talked to the community about what they do to stay safe while enjoying the Truckee River.
