The University of Nevada, Reno Police Department (UNRPD) is reminding students to take extra precautions to keep their bikes and scooters secure after a rise in thefts on campus.

According to the department in an online Facebook post, bike and scooter thefts have cost students more than $20,000 this semester.

UNR police urged students to use a U-bolt lock, register their rides, utilize the Bike Room in residence halls, and avoid leaving bikes or scooters overnight.

Police said most of the thefts have occurred near residence halls and other busy campus areas where bikes and scooters are left unattended for long periods.

Students are encouraged to report any suspicious activity and to register their bikes with campus police to help recover stolen property.

University police continue to patrol key areas and remind students that registration and secure parking options, including the Bike Room, are available to help prevent theft.
