Choosing what comes after high school can feel like a big decision, but students and families in Washoe County will have a chance to explore their options all in one place this weekend.

The Washoe County School District is hosting its annual College Fair on Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Joe Crowley Student Union at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to high school students and their families.

About 80 school representatives are expected to attend, giving students a chance to ask questions and learn more about colleges and universities from Nevada and across the country.

The fair will cover topics including college admissions requirements, academic programs, student housing, scholarships and financial aid. Spanish interpretation will also be available.

Ana Anderson, coordinator for the district's Family School Partnerships, which organizes the event, said the fair can be especially helpful for students who would be the first in their families to attend college.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for all high school students and families to learn more about colleges, careers, scholarships, and many other aspects of higher education, and it is particularly helpful for students who will be the first in their families to attend college. It is never too early to begin making plans and exploring opportunities for college, careers, or military service after high school.”

Students can connect with representatives from local schools, including the University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as well as universities in other states.

Other participating schools include Arizona State University, Boise State University, Oregon State University, Washington State University, the University of Oregon, the University of Idaho, and the United States Naval Academy.

District Chief Student Services Officer Dr. Paul LaMarca encouraged high school students and their families to attend and learn more about their options for continuing their education.
