Nearly 1,500 Myanmar nationals have arrived in the country’s largest city after being sent back from Malaysia. The United Nations refugee agency and rights groups have warned that conditions for return remain unsafe. Myanmar has been in turmoil since the military seized power in February 2021. The returnees, including 86 women, were convicted of immigration violations in Malaysia. They arrived aboard navy warships and a hospital ship. The U.N. and rights groups have criticized the repatriation, saying returnees could face persecution and forced military conscription. It is unclear if any of the returnees included minority Muslim Rohingya.
