A California couple has been charged with murder after authorities say they shot their son-in-law to death Saturday in a public park. Jonathan McKinsey's death came as he and the couple's daughter were part of a bitter divorce and custody battle for their three young children. Shili Chen and Shouyong Zhang, both 77, briefly appeared in court Wednesday for an arraignment on the charges that was postponed until Thursday. In petitions for restraining orders filed last year, the couple accused each other of years of physical, emotional and psychological abuse. McKinsey, who is transgender, alleged that both Candice Jang and her parents were verbally and physically abusive toward him.
The attorney for a Northern California woman charged with her husband in the killing of their son-in-law says she plans to plead not guilty. The defense will focus on alleged abuse by the slain man. Shili Chen and her husband, Shouyong Zhang, both 77, appeared in court to request more time before entering a plea. Authorities say they shot Jonathan McKinsey on Saturday in a public park. This happened days before a hearing in a bitter divorce and custody case between McKinsey and the couple's daughter. Prosecutors say surveillance video shows both shooting McKinsey.
