Police say a teacher threw her phone at the teenage gunman who killed four people at an Oregon elementary school, then tackled and fought with him. The gunman was then shot and killed by a father who followed him into the building. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz called the teacher's actions “heroic” during a news conference. He says she was not injured. He identified the attacker as 16-year-old Griffin J. John. Krantz says all of the victims were shot in the same classroom. Authorities say John had once been a special needs student at the school and had attacked a classroom with special needs students. Krantz says John fired as many as 15 shots from a 12-gauge shotgun.
A teacher wounded in last week’s attack on a special education classroom at an Oregon elementary school says she never had a chance to try to shelter any of the children inside. Becky Drury said Wednesday in a statement issued by a family friend that she ran to see what was going on but immediately saw the shooter and rushed back to the classroom. She tried to close the door, but the shooter was already there. She says she was shot at close range and fell down. She says she was unable to get up and could only pretend to be dead.
