One person is dead and four others have been hospitalized after a two-car crash on Highway 50 Sunday evening.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP), the crash happened on westbound U.S. Highway 50, near the area of Golf Club Drive.

NHP received the initial call about the crash just after 4:00 p.m.

After a preliminary investigation, NHP says that a Honda SUV was traveling westbound on U.S. 50 at a high rate of speed, and was unable to safely negotiate a curve.

The Honda struck a Volvo before running off of the right shoulder and overturning, ejecting two of the occupants.

One woman was pronounced dead as she was being transported to a hospital.

Four other people—two men, one woman and one child—were injured in the crash and taken to a local hospital.

The occupants of the Volvo did not report any injuries.

Officials say impairment and speed played factors in the crash.

Drivers can expect intermittent full closures of westbound U.S. 50 while crews continue to investigate.

Travelers are advised to avoid the area and find detours, if possible.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Region Two Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the crash.
