The Salvation Army collected donations for months as a part of their Angel Tree donation program, and today those gifts went out to the local families who were signed up.
You may have noticed the trees around the community, they each had a plethora of tags on them with a child's name, how old they are, and what they may want or need this holiday season.
The community came together and showed up to help fulfill these lists.
“This is distribution day! WOOHOO! Alright, we’re ready!” Major Randy Hartt, the Northern Nevada Coordinator for the Salvation Army exclaims.
He talks about the distribution day "We have tons of volunteers who are putting food into their cars then they come up for their toys and we give them their toys we wish them a Merry Christmas, it's such a wonderful time it's a great emotional time, because wishing a Merry Christmas and people are just grateful that they've got presents and food for their families."
The Salvation Army collected toys and food for this distribution day, where they give back to over 1,500 families who need it most for the holidays.
You may remember the Salvation Army was short on protein donations this year, but fortunately, they did end up buying more as more people donated money to help cover the costs.
They say every year the thing they see the most from these families is relief.
Major Hartt says "People are trying to make ends meet and when they come here and they don't have to worry about it, stocking stuffers and an article of clothing and several toys for each child and their family and they've got food and meat for that time, it's a relief."
The Salvation Army also wants to send out a huge thank you to the community for coming together and helping to make everyone's holiday a great one.
