The Salvation Army is asking for help to feed families in need this holiday season, after falling short on food donations.
"We were very grateful to the community, what they did for the Turkey Drop, but we fell short of our goal and we’re trying to meet a certain goal because we need to try and save as much of the money we make in Christmas season and help families all year long," said Major Randy Hartt, the Northern Nevada Coordinator for The Salvation Army. "Rent assistance, facility assistance, those financial things as well, as well as being able to purchase food throughout the year, so we’re trying to get as much as we can from the community so we can offset those costs."
To try and meet these goals they're holding another food drive specifically seeking proteins on Friday, December 6th from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
They say people can drop by and donate hams, turkeys, whole chickens etc. Major Hartt says "Whatever it is, we would greatly appreciate it, we have our freezer right here and will have a refrigerator truck up front."
"It’s a great opportunity for the community to help families in need," he added.
The Salvation Army is going to be helping 1,500 families this Christmas, including providing them with food and toys for kids while also hosting their Angel Tree program.
"1,500 food boxes equates to a lot of individuals who need food, so this is the reason we’re trying to get all this meat, because we’re giving it out on December 18th to families that have registered and signed up, only to families that have registered for our program," he said.
People can also drop off nonperishable food items, but they're really looking for more protein donations.
"We would really appreciate our community stepping up and helping our neighbors in need," said Major Hart.
The Salvation Army also stresses the families counting on them will have those meals no matter what, but filling the gap on their own would cut into funding for other programs they have that help families year-round."
You can donate to The Salvation Army on Friday, December 6th at the Salvation Army's parking lot along Sutro Street, and drop off proteins between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
If you are unable to make it that day, you can also drop off protein anytime Monday through Friday at their Sutro Street location between 9 a.m. and noon as well as between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
These donations collected will go towards helping families in the Angel Tree program. Along with these food donations, you can also help buy toys for children in this program through the Angel Tree program.
