A strong cold front dumped 1-3 inches of snow to the Truckee Meadows and Basin and Range Wednesday night, leading to slick roads on Thursday. Reno averages slightly more than five inches during the months of December and January, ten total.
It’s been a late start to the winter season in Reno with only a trace of snow falling at the airport until Wednesday night. Reno usually sees almost 21 inches of snow each year. It can even snow in late spring around here.
Storms that travel over land are generally colder with less moisture. This was the case with the storm that developed last night. Unlike atmospheric rivers, the snow was not good for snowmaking and had a higher snow ratio. Light fluffy snow happens when it is colder.
High pressure moves in on Friday and sticks around for a while, leading to a gradual warming trend and dry conditions.
