On Thursday night, at Dodson Elementary School, the Washoe County School District Zoning Advisory Committee met to hear a presentation on, discuss, and vote on the possible rezoning of four elementary schools for 2028.Â
"We have four schools that could actually fit into two schools based off of the declining enrollment," said Tami Zimmerman, Chief Facilities Management Officer, WCSD.Â
According to the agenda, Smithridge and Dodson will be closing to consolidate into a new elementary school on the old Pine campus.Â
The committee was presented with enrollment rezoning opportunities due to this consolidation, and was presented with several options.Â
They ended up voting 10-1 in favor of Option 4, which will see North Dodson students rezoned to Hidden Valley Elementary and South Dodson students to Donner Springs.Â
The option will also see Corbett and Smithridge students rezoned to the new Pine campus.Â
Zimmerman says hosting these meetings at the schools they are affecting is key to hearing from the community.
"We really like to be out in the community for this meeting space. The families are usually comfortable coming to their school, so whatever schools are on the agenda, we try to move around and get out to those schools," he said.
The committee also discussed rezoning for schools in the 2027 school year, with those schools being Libby Booth, Echo Loder, and Veterans Memorial Elementary School. No action was taken.
