As former Hurricane Polo weakened over northwestern Mexico, the storm’s remnants are battering the U.S. Southwest. Roadways flooded and residents in small New Mexico towns had to evacuate over concerns about a dam failing. Polo had lashed the Mexican state of Baja California Sur with powerful winds and flash flooding early Tuesday. It crossed the Gulf of California and weakened. By Tuesday evening, roads across New Mexico flooded while Arizona was becoming drenched, leading to several water rescues. The National Weather Service says the flood risk is expected to move into parts of the central U.S. later this week.
