Migrants, some of them unaccompanied minors, who crossed from Morocco into Spain, write down their contact information to give to a neighborhood association in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026.
Families have gathered at the Moroccan border with Ceuta, searching for missing relatives among returning migrants. Authorities say most of the 72,000 migrants who crossed into Ceuta in recent days have returned to Morocco. The surge was driven by poverty and fueled by rumors that the border was open. More than 80 people died during the crossing as some migrants swam and others climbed fences. Facebook groups that guided the migrants with advice are now used to search for missing loved ones. Some parents hope their children will try again for Europe, seeking a better future.
