Jihadist groups still pose a major threat to Europe, but 25 years after the 9/11 attacks a new menace driven by young people online is emerging. European Union Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Bartjan Wegter says this violence is often for its own sake, with no direct link to ideology, and mostly involves boys. Last year, 45 terrorist attacks were reported across 10 EU countries, with 486 arrests. About a third of those arrested were under 18. In an interview with AP, Wegter tells AP that these incidents are often organized by online networks and are difficult to track. He urges law enforcement agencies to adapt to the new digital environment.
