Indonesian rescuers have launched a search operation after a passenger ship carrying more than 240 people lost contact in the Java Sea while traveling from East Java to South Kalimantan on Borneo island. The Search and Rescue Office in Banjarmasin, a city in South Kalimantan province, said they received a report the Virgo Transport 8 had experienced a communication failure while en route to the city from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city in East Java province. Initial information indicated the vessel’s last known position was in the Java Sea, about 92 miles from a pier in Banjarmasin. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

That’s according to highlights of the cockpit recording that the National Transportation Safety Board released Wednesday. The summary of cockpit voice recordings compiled by the NTSB said the fellow pilot never gave “a consistent verbal response” to the warnings. Five members of a cleaning crew were wrapping up their shift when they were killed as an Amazon cargo jet plowed into their van at the Miami airport. A lawyer for one of the victims, Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit Wednesday. The crew worked for Professional Ocean Service Corporation, which has cleaned planes at the airport for 15 years. The company cleans the inside and outside of private and commercial jets. A union that represents aircraft cleaners says the job is hot, dangerous, and not well-compensated.

Flight data suggest an Amazon cargo plane tried to abort an unsteady landing at Miami International Airport before smashing into a van and killing five people inside. That's according to information investigators released Tuesday evening. Authorities say the five people killed were all inside a van used to shuttle crews that clean planes. The jet crashed as it tried to land Sunday afternoon, overrunning its runway. It slammed into the van on airport property, through a fence and then on to a local street where it destroyed an SUV. The pilot and co-pilot have been released from the hospital and will be interviewed Wednesday.
