More than 50 years after South Carolina raised a Confederate flag at its Statehouse to protest the civil rights movement, the rebel banner will be removed Friday in a state where such a reversal seemed unthinkable a month ago.

The South Carolina Senate has given final approval to a bill to remove the Confederate flag from the grounds of the Capitol. The 36-3 vote Tuesday now sends the bill to the House, where it faces a less certain future.
