A woman deported to Mexico despite having legal permission to remain in the U.S. has filed suit against the federal government. U.S. officials notified her they intend to terminate her permission due to what it called “unauthorized travel” stemming from her deportation. Thirty-four-year-old Jessica Treviño is asking a federal judge to intervene. Treviño was detained in December by immigration agents in Texas and deported. After arriving in the U.S. at age 7, Treviño received permission at age 20 to remain under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. But authorities recently advised her DACA status would be terminated for “unauthorized travel” around the day she was deported. The Department of Homeland Security says she knowingly accepted voluntary departure.
