For the first time in four years, life expectancy in the U.S. has gone up. The increase is small - just a month. But it marks at least a temporary halt to a downward trend.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday posted the preliminary numbers showing nearly 68,000 drug overdose deaths were reported last year.  

The U.S. cancer death rate has hit a milestone: It's been falling for at least 25 years. Experts say lower smoking rates are translating into fewer deaths.
