British police have arrested five men near RAF Fairford, an air base used by the United States during its war with Iran, on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism. The Metropolitan Police, which is leading the investigation, said the men were initially detained under the Explosives Act after a report of three suspicious vehicles near the base. The arrests were made in the nearby Whelford area. Authorities set up a cordon and evacuated about 85 households. Police said the situation appeared to be contained. The base’s proximity has prompted speculation about a possible connection, but police have not publicly established a link. The arrests come amid heightened concern about threats from hostile states.

A powerful blast has caused a building to collapse near the ancient Acropolis in Greece. The cause of the explosion on Friday is unclear but local media reported that a gas leak was suspected. The explosion occurred in an old two-story building in the tourist district of Plaka in Athens. Firefighters rescued two women who were injured and had to be rescued from an adjacent building. Neighboring buildings and parked cars were also damaged by the explosion. The injured women were transported to a hospital. Local media report a passer-by was also slightly injured. The fire department deployed specialist rescue crews with a sniffer dog to search whether any more people might be trapped in the rubble.

Trump administration has cut or frozen $177 billion in grants across every state, analysis shows

An analysis finds that the Trump administration has cut or frozen up to $177 billion in federal grants since the president took office for his second term. On Wednesday, a nonprofit and a group of researchers and scientists released a tracking tool that shows the cuts have affected all states and the District of Columbia. Health, nutrition, the environment and disaster relief make up the largest share of the cuts. Among the grants that were eliminated, frozen or delayed were ones related to maternal health in Michigan, education research in Mississippi and assistance to minority farmers in Iowa. The analysis is by the States United Democracy Center and the Grant Witness organization.

15-year-old rescued after clinging to capsized boat for days in Alaska's Bering Sea

A fishing crew in Alaska’s Bering Sea rescued a teenager who clung to a capsized boat for roughly two days in the frigid waters. The rescuers say they also recovered the bodies of the boy’s brother and a cousin who died sometime after the boat flipped. The Coast Guard says it began searching for the skiff Monday morning. An aircrew spotted the 15-year-old hours later on top of the boat near Alaska’s remote St. Lawrence Island. A nearby fishing vessel then approached the overturned skiff. Video of the rescue shows the boy kneeling atop the skiff before the boat’s crew pulled him into a rescue basket.
